In January 2019, the indie sci-fi film “IO” starring Anthony Mackie premiered on Netflix to poor reviews and was quickly forgotten. A year later Mackie led Netflix’s second season of “Altered Carbon” which got decidedly worse reviews than the first season and was scrapped.
Now the pair are hoping third time’s the charm with “Outside the Wire,” another indie sci-fi feature opening hitting the service in the same mid-January slot though this time he’s got a more interesting cast with him including Pilou Asbaek, Michael Kelly, Emily Beecham, Damon Idris and Enzo Cilenti.
Set in the future, a drone pilot (Idris) is sent into a deadly militarized zone where he finds himself working for an android officer (Mackie) tasked to locate a doomsday device before the insurgents do.
Directed by Mikael Hafstrom (“1408”) and written by Rob Yescombe (“The Division”) and Rowan Athale, the film hits the service on January 15th.
