The final box-office numbers for the Memorial Day holiday weekend are in with “Top Gun: Maverick” soaring above even the rosiest estimations.

The Tom Cruise-led sequel scored the best Memorial Day opening of all time with a three-day domestic haul of $126.7 million and $160.5 million for the four days.

With better than expected results on Sunday and Monday, it handily beats previous record-holder “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” which had a four-day haul of $153 million.

It’s also easily a career-best launch for Tom Cruise, and a massive 37% of the gross came from IMAX and premium-format screens. Overseas, the film is doing equally impressive business with $124 million from 62 markets – meaning by the end of four days of global release, the film had taken in more than $280 million.

The success of the $170 million-budgeted film is being pegged as a defining moment in the recovery of the cinema box office as it’s not one fueled by 18-34 year-olds, nor is it a superhero feature. Combined with its stellar critical and audience scores, it’s hoped to accelerate demand for a wider swath of studio moviegoing.
