While Sony and Marvel’s two “Spider-Man” films set within the MCU to date have generally been quieter affairs compared to the massive ensembles of some of the other movies, that’s about to change.

The currently in production third film in the series and it keeps sounding more like an attempt to match or even exceed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” in terms of ambition and scope with a whole bunch of multiverse crossover craziness.

Recently the film’s star Tom Holland, soon to be seen in the opioid drama “Cherry” on Apple TV+, told Variety this is far more than just another “Spider-Man” sequel:

“I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it.

And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little s–t who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it.”

The comments come as production is gearing up on Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” which is expected to also heavily revolve around the multiverse.

The Jon Watts-directed new “Spider-Man” is scheduled to hit cinemas December 17th.
