Global action star Tom Cruise gave a passionate speech about cinemagoing on Rome’s Spanish Steps as part of the world premiere of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” in Italy.
Cruise, dressed in a blue suit and aviators, says “different cultures and ways of life all join together to enjoy cinema”. He then said his goal has always been to “make movies and travel” and through his films:
“I’ve been able to have that because everyone here has allowed me to entertain them. It’s a privilege that I have never taken for granted. It’s my passion to entertain you, and I will always fight for big theaters and that kind of experience for everyone.”
He also called the film’s director Christopher McQuarrie his “creative brother and an exceptional human being” who has “had a hand in every single film I’ve made over the past sixteen years” before specifically pointing out his uncredited work on the script for Brad Bird’s fourth M:I film “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”. McQuarrie has directed each of the ‘Mission’ films after that.
The Rome premiere ties in with the film as the cobblestoned streets of the city are a key part of a car chase sequence involving a Hummer chasing a vintage yellow Fiat 500. The project was also shot in England, Abu Dhabi and Norway.
Co-star Simon Pegg spoke with Deadline and revealed that he sometimes has the same thought many of us have watching Cruise over the years – that one day a stunt might go wrong, and he won’t survive:
“Tom is jumping off cliffs on a motorbike. He’s hanging his you know, hanging off trains – it’s genuinely dangerous stuff. There’s always a sense that, you know, one day, something might go wrong, we might lose Tom, you know. Anytime there’s a big stunt, we all have that sense of, you know, fear, but he always pulls it off.”
Indeed, Cruise is still finishing off “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2” whilst McQuarrie revealed the other day they’re already talking about a potential ninth film in the franchise.
