A new report from scooper DanielRPK indicates that Tom Cruise is being eyed for the villain role in Joseph Kosinski’s new film adaptation of iconic 1980s NBC series “Miami Vice” at Universal Pictures.
Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer penned the script for the film that will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami as it follows the two detectives who worked undercover.
The project is said to be inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series, which Michael Mann produced and was hugely influential on the TV and cultural landscape.
Mann himself, who directed Cruise’s celebrated villain turn in 2004’s “Collateral,” helmed a film reboot of “Miami Vice” in 2006 which had a more gritty modern edge.
At last report Austin Butler is in talks to play the co-lead role of James ‘Sonny’ Crockett while Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan is in talks to portray his on-screen partner, undercover detective Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs.
If Cruise signs on, it would mark his his third film with Kosinski following “Oblivion” and “Top Gun: Maverick”. Universal has scheduled the film for cinema release on August 6th 2027.
