Toad To Sing In “Super Mario Bros. Movie”

One of the best-received elements of the recent “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” trailer was that of Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

Though there’s still debate about Chris Pratt’s voice as Mario, Key nailed his brief lines and has people genuinely excited about his performance.

Speaking with Variety recently, Key revealed he gets to do a song in the film, a number he improvised:

“I got to improvise a song in ‘Super Mario Bros.,’ which was an absolute blast. That was just a stick of fun, that whole thing.

I was working on the voice with my partner and trying to find the voice through the internal journey of the character. And then with the directors [Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic], we sprinkled some things in, we moved it around.

There was something about the timbre. I wanted it higher and higher and higher. And that’s where we ended up, and I’m really happy with where we ended up”.

This follows on from Jack Black revealing at New York Comic Con last week he will rock out as Bowser, saying he brought “some of my heavy metal roots” to the villain and the audience will be surprised “to see that Bowser has a musical side”.

Key also confirmed he has a “very big elongated musical number” alongside Timothee Chalamet in the “Wonka” origin film, and another number in that film in which he and other people sing about the young chocolatier.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” opens April 7th 2023 whilst “Wonka” arrives December 15th 2023.
