A new story in the New York Post indicates that former SNL writer and Weekend Update anchor Tina Fey is “being courted” to take over as executive producer of “Saturday Night Live”.
The report indicates Fey would take on the job whenever the show’s 78-year-old creator Lorne Michaels decides to step down from a position he’s been in since the show began five decades ago.
However, it’s unknown if Michaels has any immediate plans to give up the position, and an NBC spokesperson tells ET Canada that “there is no truth” to the report.
They pointed out an interview with The New York Times last year in which Michaels revealed that he has “no plans to retire”.
Yet Michaels has teased potential retirement before. Three years ago, the showrunner told CBS News that the show’s 50th season in 2024-2025 would be a “really good time to leave”.
Fey was on SNL from 1997 to 2006, after which she went on to big success with sitcoms like “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”. She is also set to write, produce, and star in a movie adaptation of the “Mean Girls” Broadway musical.
