Thora Birch (“The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” “The Walking Dead”) has exited Tim Burton’s live-action “Addams Family” mystery series “Wednesday” at Netflix.
Currently filming in Romania, the series stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams during her years at Nevermore Academy.
According to sources, Birch is dealing with a family illness and a rep for the MGM series says she will not be returning to the production. Birch had reportedly finished filming the bulk of her series regular role as Tamara Novak, Wednesday’s dorm mother.
Rather than recast, producers will add a new character to the show’s first season to potentially take up some of the storyline. How much, and how much reshooting will be required, isn’t clear.
The series also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as matriarch Morticia Addams and Luis Guzman as Gomez Addams with the project hailing from “Smallville” creators Al Gough and Miles Millar while Burton directs.
