Eleven-year-old newcomer Alisha Weir has been cast as the title character in Netflix’s film adaptation of the stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel.
Also, Emma Thompson has joined the cast as cruel headmistress Miss Trunchbull who serves as the story’s villain.
The pair join Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, the kindly teacher that encourages Matilda and her telekinetic gifts.
The story centers on a precocious and gifted girl who uses her powers to overcome bullies, including her family and her school’s principal.
Matthew Warchus, who also directed the hit Tony and Olivier Award-winning Broadway musical, helms the project.
Dennis Kelly adapted the script while the original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin will be included.
