Thomas Kail Directing Live-Action “Moana”

Disney

Tony Award-winning “Hamilton” director Thomas Kail has been set to direct Disney’s live-action film adaptation of their 2016 animated musical “Moana”.

Landing two Oscar nominations, the original followed a young Pacific Islander of the same name who disobeys her chieftain father and sets out into the ocean to reunite a mystical relic with its owner, a goddess named Te Fiti.

Along the way, she releases the demigod Maui from his island prison, is captured by a monstrous crab, and finds the strength to become the chief her father believed she could be.

The film opened theatrically on Thanksgiving weekend of that year, earning strong reviews and $683 million worldwide. To this day, it remains one of Disney’s best performers on VOD and SVOD platforms.

The live-action take will celebrate the islands, communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pave her own path.

Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, penned the remake, along with Dana Ledoux Miller.

Dwayne Johnson will return to the role of Maui, the grandiose demigod of the wind and sea. Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, Scott Sheldon, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are producing.
