Third “TRON” Sets August Filming Start

Disney

A third film in Disney’s “TRON” franchise is moving forward. Deadline reports that the project, going by the name “TRON: Ares,” is targeting an August start of shooting in Vancouver.

In addition, Disney is in early negotiations to set Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning (“Kon-Tiki,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”) to direct. Jared Leto remains attached to star in the project.

“Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski helmed 2010’s “TRON: Legacy” which served as a sequel to Disney’s 1982 sci-fi feature. The sequel was praised highly for its visuals, production design and Daft Punk score but was less well-regarded in terms of its story and acting.

Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, James Frain, Bruce Boxleitner, Beau Garrett and Michael Sheen starred in the film, which pulled in a $400 million worldwide gross, but due to its sizable $170 million budget, it wasn’t enough for Disney to push forward with a third entry at the time.

In 2020, “Lion” director Garth Davis was tapped to direct a new film from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow with Leto’s name attached. Wigutow’s script is still set to be used. Leto, Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, and Emma Ludbrook will produce.

Rønning most recently wrapped the Daisy Ridley-led and Jerry Bruckheimer-produced “Young Woman and the Sea” for the studio. That film follows the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
