Third “Mortal Kombat” Film Script Teased

Warner Bros. Pictures

Even though the upcoming sequel to the 2021 film adaptation of the “Mortal Kombat” game franchise isn’t due out for another two months, Warner Bros. Pictures seems very keen to shorten the gap between entries.

During New York Comic Con in October last year, the news came that “Moon Knight” series creator Jeremy Slater, who wrote the new “Mortal Kombat II,” would return to pen a third entry in the film franchise.

At the time, Slater said on stage: “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy and excited with this movie. They are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they already hired me to start writing the next instalment of ‘Mortal Kombat'”.

Well, it appears he has made major progress. In a posting on X this evening, franchise producer Todd Garner has revealed a photo of the bottom half of the film’s script with Slater’s name, a ‘Based on the games from NetherRealm Studios’ credit, and a ‘Draft 1.1’ signifier dated this past Friday.

At the top of the script is a partial logo, which was quickly identified as being from the original “Mortal Kombat 3” game logo. Further work is no doubt needed, but this suggests that production on another entry could begin quickly if Warner Bros. gives it the go-ahead.

The second film was originally slated to be released in October last year, but then got pushed by the studio to May as they wanted to position it as a major Summer tentpole.

The strategy appears to have worked. On YouTube alone, the full trailer this past week has racked up 17 million views in a few days – a notable jump on the 12 million views the teaser trailer pulled in over a span of seven months.

“Mortal Kombat II” is set to open in cinemas everywhere, including IMAX, on May 8th.
