“Mamma Mia!” musical creator Judy Craymer indicates a third film based on the best-selling stage production is in its “earliest stages”.
In an interview with Deadline, Craymer says nothing official is set but a third film is in very early development with the previous film’s stars Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski being eyed to return.
Craymer says: “There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back — and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna… there’s a trilogy there.”
The original stage show premiered in 1999 and followed the story of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island paradise – all unfolding to the music of ABBA. 65 million people across the world have seen the stage show.
The jukebox musical films were released in 2008 and 2018 and also starred the likes of Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgard and Julie Walters. The original grossed $611 million worldwide on a $52 million budget, while the sequel made $402 million worldwide on a $75 million budget.
Craymer is also currently working with Cher on a film about her life, but further details about the film have yet to be announced. Cher had a key role in the second “Mamma Mia” film.
The news also comes as ITV1 is set to premiere the eight-part competition series “Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream”, which will search for two ingenues to play key roles in the “Mamma Mia!” production for London’s West End.
