20th Century Studios and James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” hit early tracking today, with the title looking to debut at around $110 million.
That would be behind the $134.1 million debut of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” though that film appeared on tracking with a potential $150-175 million debut and came in a bit short.
The film is drawing interest from all four quadrants, though it is going stronger with men. The big question is, will the film have the legs of the second one?
“Avatar: The Way of Water” was such a hit because it ended up doing five times its opening – that $134.1 million domestic debut turning into a $688.4 million North American overall haul. Its predecessor did an almost unheard of ten times multiplier to eventually gross $785.2 million domestically.
Worldwide, the second film managed to get up to $2.34 billion – the third-highest-grossing movie ever.
Cameron himself has indicated that he’s not committing to a fourth film in the saga unless the new one brings in similar numbers to the sequel.
