Third “Avatar” Targets $1.5-1.8 Billion Total

James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has just passed the $900 million box-office mark, but how much further will it go?

With a reported budget of $400 million, the third film needs to have a long cinema run to justify any further entries in the series. The first film ended its run with a $2.9 billion global gross in 2009.

The second film, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” closed out its run in 2022 with $2.3 billion. Now, with over two weeks of data on the film’s performance on hand, THR reports that box-office analysts are suggesting the film will end its run somewhere between $1.5-1.8 billion worldwide.

That’s incredibly impressive, making it one of the year’s biggest hits, but may not be enough to justify a fourth and fifth feature. On Day 14, the film stands at $266 million domestic and $935 million worldwide, compared to the second film at $358 million domestic and over $1 billion internationally at the same point.

The news comes as the global box-office of 2025 has ended with $33.5 billion – up 12% on 2024. Removing China from the equation, where the $2+ billion success of “Ne Zha 2” has impacted, growth for the rest of the world is still 8% up.
