Sony Pictures is officially moving forward with its proposed third film in its “28 Years Later” trilogy following events this week.
The Danny Boyle-directed “28 Years Later” launched this past summer, the long-awaited follow-up to Boyle’s own “28 Days Later” nearly a quarter of a century later.
When that project was sold, it was with plans for a trilogy of films that would all be penned by Alex Garland. Production on the sequel, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” got underway essentially straight after the first film wrapped, with Nia DaCosta directing.
However, production on a third film was held off, waiting to see how the first film performed. The first movie received good reviews and ended up grossing $151 million at the box office from a $60 million budget – the highest of the franchise to date.
Since then, it wasn’t clear if Sony would proceed. Then, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” screened for the media this week, and reactions out of a screening in Century City in Los Angeles have been great, prompting the studio to move forward on the third feature.
Boyle has previously said in interviews he’d like to return for the final film, and at last report, that’s still the plan.
