Production on the third season of Netflix’s high fantasy drama “The Witcher” has begun with the first photo released of actors Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan back in costume as Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri respectively.
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich confirms the new season will adapt “Time of Contempt,” the second novel in Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series. In the new season, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.
Entrusted with Ciri’s magic training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girls’ untapped powers.
Instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.
The second season notoriously hit multiple production issues after beginning in early 2020 right as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. A combination of delays, and a serious torn hamstring injury of its star Cavill, led to filming completing fourteen months after starting (compared to seven months for the first season).
Thus it’s fairly likely the new season will be filmed across the rest of the year ahead of a debut sometime well into 2023. In the meantime Netflix has re-confirmed the live-action prequel miniseries “The Witcher: Blood Origin” will arrive at some point in 2022.
