CD Projekt Red president and CEO Adam Kicinski revealed this week at a Q1 2023 earnings conference that the acclaimed video game title “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” has hit 50 million copies sold.
That puts it as the ninth best-selling video game of all time, just behind “Red Dead Redemption 2” at #8 with 53 million copies. Kicinski adds that the entire “Witcher” trilogy combined has now passed 75 million copies sold.
Helped along by a recent re-release that boosted the graphics for modern consoles, along with the ever-helpful branding boost that comes from the Netflix series.
The only other games to have sold better are “Minecraft” at #1 with 238 million copies sold, “Grand Theft Auto V” at 180 million, “Tetris” (EA’s mobile version) at 100 million, “Wii Sports” at 82.9 million, “PUBG: Battlegrounds” at 75 million, “Mario Kart 8” at 62.5 million and the original “Super Mario Bros.” at 58 million.
The sales record smash comes as three more entries in the franchise are on the way, including a multiplayer title, a story-driven single-player open-world RPG title handled by a third-party team made up of ex-Witcher veterans and the first of a whole new trilogy built on the legacy of “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”.
