HBO is developing “The Idol,” a drama series that is being shaped as a starring vehicle for Abel Tesfaye – better known as chart-topping musician The Weeknd.
The series follows a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.
“Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson co-created the series with Tesfaye and his producing partner Reza Fahim. Along with starring, Tesfaye would also co-write with Mary Laws (“Succession,” “Preacher”).
The three men will executive produce along with showrunner Joseph Epstein (“Health and Wellness”), Ashley Levinson, Kevin Turen and Aaron L. Gilbert.
