The “Weapons” Reviews Are In

New Line Cinema

Ahead of its release this coming weekend, critics reviews are now out for “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger’s new film “Weapons”.

The story unfolds in the small town of Maybrook. Seventeen children wake up and voluntarily walk out the front door of their homes at 2:17am one morning – inexplicably disappearing without a trace.

All were from the same school class. In the wake of this, the community looks for answers while struggling to comprehend what may have happened to them. Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, June Diane Raphael and Toby Huss star.

With 23 reviews counted, the film sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and 83/100 on Metacritic indicating a superb reception overall thus far. Here’s a sampling of reviews:

“An intricately plotted, supremely twisty horror thriller, Weapons takes its time laying out an elaborate story, repeatedly shifting perspectives and main characters until the myriad strands come together in immensely satisfying fashion.” – Tim Grierson, Screen

“The result is a propulsive, perfectly paced thriller that expertly keeps the audience on its toes throughout, leaving things tantalisingly mysterious until a brilliant reveal that will appeal most keenly to those horror fans who were bewitched by the aforementioned Longlegs.” – Patrick Cremona, Radio Times

“A constantly surprising and often horrific mystery that blends drama and scares in a way that creates something truly special.” – Germain Lussier, io9

“Weapons does everything a good horror movie should… it grips, confounds, terrifies, and provokes in equal measure, while also managing to entertain for every second of its runtime.” – Chris Tilly, Dexerto

“It’s worth seeing for its bold aim from Cregger, a filmmaker still very much on the rise and filled with tremendous promise, but one that may leave many viewers as frustrated and divided as the characters in the film.” – Matt Neglia, Next Best Picture

“If there is an unshakable issue with Weapons, it’s that we never feel the weight of the tragedy or impact it’s had on the town outside of that first meeting and the occasional glance of a missing poster.” – Alistair Ryder, The Film Stage

“In many ways, this is an expertly crafted chiller. A strong cast and an intriguing chapter structure also work in its favor. But ultimately, it’s not really about anything much” – David Rooney, THR

“For 3/4 of the movie, this approach lets our imaginations go wild. It’s only when the answer emerges that “Weapons” starts to lose its edge. Regardless of how you feel about the ending (and many will happily embrace the movie’s darkly comic finale), Cregger has achieved something remarkable here, crafting a cruel and twisted bedtime story.” – Peter DeBruge, Variety

“Weapons” is set to open in cinemas this Friday.
