“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to adapt a stage musical version of “The Warriors,” the 1965 Sol Yurick novel which previously was adapted into Walter Hill’s iconic 1979 film adaptation.
According to The New York Post, both the film and novel follow a fictional street gang in New York City framed for the murder of a respected gang leader.
The group must traverse the thirty miles from the north end of the Bronx to their home turf on Coney Island in South Brooklyn, with every rival gang member across the city out for their blood.
That film wasn’t a musical, though it does feature some notable songs whilst also dealing with issues of urban decay and gangland violence that are still present today. Grossing $22 million from a $4 million budget, the film has become a cult classic and has seen its negative reputation upon release almost entirely reversed.
Further details on the stage production remain under wraps. Miranda recently did a polish on the lyrics for Kander and Ebb musical “New York, New York” inspired by Martin Scorsese’s 1977 film.
Miranda recently wrote the catchy music for Disney’s animated films “Moana” and “Encanto”.
