Reviews are out for James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” and not only are they easily the best of the DCEU to date, they’re among some of the best reviews of all modern comic book movies.

As of writing, 68 professional critics reviews have been tabulated resulting in a 99% and an average rating of 8.1/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. To put that in perspective, the best prior DCEU film was Patty Jenkins’ first “Wonder Woman” at 94% & 7.7/10.

Also in comparison, the best Marvel Studios films have been “Black Panther” (96% & 8.3/10), “Avengers: Endgame” (96% & 8.2/10) and “Iron Man” (94% & 7.7/10). Gunn’s best MCU effort, the first “Guardians of the Galaxy,” sits at 92% & 7.8/10.

Here’s a select sampling of quotes from reviews:

“Gunn gels it together with a wicked sense of humour and an evident affection for his characters who, though not so endearing as his Guardians of the Galaxy, are a hoot to hang around with” – Dan Jolin, Time Out

“Not only does it find the nastily enjoyable vibe that eluded its predecessor, but it also tells a story worth following” – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

“”The Suicide Squad” is relentlessly unapologetic, wacky and weird, violent and bloody, and darkly humorous. It also has so much heart that you may find yourself fighting back tears by its end.” – Kirsten Acuna, Insider

“A film considerably more entertaining than its predecessor, retaining the cold draught of bleakness that blows through the best of the DC Universe but with the visual brightness and romantic yearning that makes Gunn’s work pop.” – Leslie Felperin, Financial Times

“Within “The Suicide Squad” is not only a negotiation with American power, and its depiction in comic-book movies, but a heartfelt if extreme gallery of damaged souls. It’s a kind of genuinely tender freak show.” – Jake Coyle, Associated Press

“The Guardians of the Galaxy-style goofiness mixed in with lingering shots of maimed lasagne-like innards feels queasy and all wrong; it’s like someone exposing themselves at a wedding.” – Christina Newland, iNews

The reviews arrive a week ahead of the film’s release both in cinemas and via HBO Max on August 5th.
