The “Spider-Verse” Sequel Runs Long

Sony Pictures Animation

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is set to continue the trend of blockbusters running long this year.

An AMC listing for the film has it clocking in at 140 minutes – almost half an hour longer than its 116 minutes long predecessor. In fact, it’s the longest animated film ever made by a Hollywood studio – beating previous record holder “Consuming Spirits” from 2012.

It joins other films of late running long, including “John Wick: Chapter 4” at 169 minutes, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” at 149 minutes, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” at 142 minutes, Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” at 206 minutes and Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” which is expected to clock in somewhere around 180 minutes.

The film is the first of a two-parter, and the roomy runtime is expected to relate to the film’s sizable cast, including Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy AKA Spider-Gwen, Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099 Miguel O’Hara, Jake Johnson as O.G. Spider-Man Peter Parker, Issa Rae as Spider-Woman Jessica Drew, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Karan Soni as Spider-Man India and Jason Schwartzman as The Spot.

Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Shea Whigham, Rachel Dratch and Andy Samberg also star in the film, which follows on from 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” which grossed $384.3 million against a $90 million budget.

After Miles Morales reunites with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.

But when the heroes clash over handling a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero to save the people he loves most.

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson direct, while Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg with Alonzo Ruvalcaba produce.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” will open in cinemas on June 2nd. Check out a newly released trailer below:
