The Reviews For Nolan’s “Tenet” Are In

The first reviews for Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” are in and while mostly positive, the love for this one is not boiling over.

On Rotten Tomatoes with over three dozen reviews counted, the film has clocked in at an 88% approval rating and a 7.23/10 average rating. More interesting are the scores with 3/5 being the most common review mark followed by 4/5 and only one 5/5.

On Metacritic the film sits at 71/100 which falls slightly behind “Inception” and “Interstellar” on 74/100 each but above “Batman Begins” (70) and “The Prestige” (66). This doesn’t appear to be a divisive picture, but critics are definitely cool on it. Here’s a sampling of review quotes:

“Great movies always time travel – living with you beyond the closing credits, carried into the future. With Tenet, 150 minutes pass harmlessly, but the film left my head before I took off my face mask.” – Danny Leigh, Financial Times

“A concrete cornucopia of global chaos and threat, in which humanity’s survival depends on the minor matter of reshaping time and space, “Tenet” looks well suited to an anxious age.” – Guy Lodge, Variety

“In the end, “Tenet” isn’t one of Nolan’s most satisfying films. But after I’ve seen it four or five more times, maybe I’ll change my mind.” – Nicholas Barber, TheWrap

“Tenet feels a little conservative, as if Nolan’s style is a franchise rather than a framework. Despite this, it remains more interesting than most other tentpole movies and acts as a beacon for the director’s strengths” – Matt Purslow, IGN Movies

“Even if we were brave enough to try, we would not be capable of spoiling a plot so wilfully obtuse it demands repeat viewings to disentangle.” – Donald Clarke, Irish Times

“Tenet” opens in early previews in Australian cinemas today, opens globally next Friday and then previews and released in the United States in the first week of September.
