Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment have announced plans for a theatrical re-release of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” for a one-week engagement starting September 10th.
Newly remastered in 4K with Dolby Atmos sound, the special theatrical engagement also marks the beginning of the journey towards Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One”.
Those who purchase tickets for the re-release will get a sneak peek at the project that Lionsgate calls Gibson’s “most ambitious filmmaking achievement… and the largest faith film ever brought to the screen”. That film opens May 2027.
The re-release has been “meticulously remastered from the original camera negative in 4K resolution” and features a new color pass supervised by original Oscar-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, along with a Dolby Atmos audio mix reviewed and approved by Gibson.
Lionsgate has also created an all-new full-length theatrical trailer for “The Passion of the Christ” which the studio is releasing with Fathom to celebrate the film’s return to theaters.
The original film became the highest-grossing domestic R-rated film of all time for 20 years. Tickets for the re-release will be available online on July 24th.
