Universal Pictures and IMAX Cinemas have obvious confidence in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming new adaptation of “The Odyssey” it seems, so much so they may be doing something fairly unprecedented.
Box-Office Theory is reporting that 70mm IMAX tickets for the film are set to go on sale on Thursday July 17th this year – a full year before the movie opens on Friday July 17th 2026.
This comes as the film is still in production, though is expected to wrap within the next few weeks and it’s unclear what kind of runtime the movie will have. Going so early seems… frankly a little crazy.
Gizmodo subsequently confirmed that showtimes for select IMAX 70mm screenings of the film were showing up on ticketing websites earlier today, but just showtimes – no way to purchase them presently.
The outlet has reached out to Universal, Fandango, and IMAX for any comment or clarification on this, but so far there’s been no response.
Listings are also currently available on AMC with the Universal Citywalk IMAX setting only 7pm sessions. Tickets aren’t available to purchase, but the listing says they will be ‘Available Soon’.
Some have pointed to the fact that Universal did release a first trailer for the film (it’s still not officially online yet) a year out from release, but every Nolan film since “Batman Begins” (with the exception of “The Prestige”) has had their first teaser trailer arrive either in cinemas or online at least ten months, and often a full year, before release.
“Tenet,” “Oppenheimer,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” and “Dunkirk” all had teasers out one full year earlier, while “Inception,” “Interstellar” and “Batman Begins” were nearly eleven months before release.
The project marks the first feature-length Hollywood production to be entirely filmed with IMAX 70mm cameras – a format only a handful of cinemas offer presently.
