The new Michael Chaves-directed “The Conjuring” universe spin-off “The Nun II” is coming in ahead of expectations at the box-office.
The film reportedly pulled in $13 million Friday and is on its way to take in $31-34 million – slightly above the $25-30 million projections from earlier this week.
That figure is more in the range of the first two “Annabelle” films, but is still 36% down on the $53.8 million opening of the first “The Nun”. It earned a C+ CinemaScore which is better than the original’s C.
Nia Vardalos’ “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is a dud, the film taking in $3.7 million on Friday and headed for a $9.5 million opening weekend in third place. It opened to scathing critical reviews.
The Denzel Washington-led “The Equalizer 3” is tracking for second place with a $11.7M three-day haul – down 66% on its impressive opening.
The Shah Rukh Khan-led Hindi-language action thriller “Jawan” will take fourth with an estimated $6.1 million for the three-day and $7.4 million since it opened on Wednesday.
“Barbie” will close out the top five with $4.9 million in its eighth weekend of release.
