The original 1988 “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” film has topped a list of the 100 best comedies of all time as determined by Variety’s review staff.
The full list, up at Variety, saw the title coming in ahead of “Some Like it Hot” at #2, “Annie Hall” in #3, “The Great Dictator” at #4 and “Waiting for Guffman” at #5.
“Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “Duck Soup,” “Fargo,” “Young Frankenstein” and “Groundhog Day” round out the top ten.
One surprise that has people talking is classic comedy “Airplane!” (aka “Flying High”) coming in at #62, far behind some questionable choices like “The Waterboy” at #50.
Others have issues as to what films are included, saying they’re not really comedies because they’re either too romantic, too dark or just dramas with comedic elements.
But the most arguments are over the films that didn’t make the 100 – “Life of Brian,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Princess Bride,” “Clue,” “Top Secret,” “Raising Arizona,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “What’s Up Doc?” and more.
