Bloober Team (“Layers of Fear”) has announced that its 2021 paranormal thriller video game “The Medium” will be adapted into a live-action TV series as a co-production with Polish visual effects company Platige Image.
The game sees players assuming the role of Marianne, a medium living in post-Communism Poland who is able to travel between the normal world and the spiritual realm.
Recurring visions, the death of a foster parent, and a mysterious man named Thomas leads to Marianne setting out to solve a murder mystery that ties to the origin of her powers.
The series version will be led by filmmaker Tomasz Baginski, who serves as a producer on Netflix’s “The Witcher” series and created the cinematic intros for all three CD Projekt Red “Witcher” games.
Co-leading the project is Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno who indicates the recent success of Netflix’s game-to-TV adaptations inspired the project. In a statement, Babieno says:
“The story we told in the game was appreciated by players, and now more people will be able to hear about it. The latest hits of streaming platforms based on games such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or Arcane have shown that this is the perfect time for such productions.
Participation in the creative supervision of the project from such an important figure in Polish cinematography as Tomasz BagiÅ„ski proves that we want to create something truly amazing. The whole team working on the concept of the series felt they were working on something special, we hope that this enthusiasm will be visible in the quality of the series.”
“The Medium” is partly inspired by Konami’s venerated “Silent Hill” franchise, and earlier this year Bloober says its next title will be based on an existing horror IP from a famed gaming publisher which has fuelled speculation of a “Silent Hill” revival.
