Marvel’s big-budget six-episode “Secret Invasion” mini-series has come to a close and with that comes some elements that set up numerous future entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s a breakdown of what could be impacted:
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE “SECRET INVASION” FINALE
Following the final showdown between Nick Fury and the rebel Skrulls, Fury returned to the S.A.B.E.R. space station to work on a peace treaty between the Skrulls and the Kree – his wife Priscilla accompanying him. This would appear to lead directly into “The Marvels”, which begins with Fury on the S.A.B.E.R. station.
Previously it was announced that the “Armor Wars” series focusing on James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes (Don Cheadle) was going to be retooled into a film.
Now this series has revealed the real Rhodes has been in stasis seemingly longer than anybody else on the basement level of New Skrullos, potentially since the end of “Captain America: Civil War” going by the hospital gown. Thus the film will have to deal with the aftermath of Rhodey being kidnapped and having been replaced by the Skrulls for possibly years.
President Ritson (Dermot Mulroney) has signed an anti-alien proclamation declaring all aliens as enemies of the state – which radicalises vigilantes around the globe who began hunting down Skrulls – innocent or not.
Fury warns Ritson that his actions will make him a one-term President, which proves to be true as “Captain America: Brave New World” will Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross in power as the new U.S. President – elected sometime between this and the events of that film opening next year.
In addition, “Thunderbolts” also ties into U.S. politics, so the ramifications of what happened with Ritson and the Skrulls could play into that film.
Then there’s Emilia Clarke’s G’iah, who thanks to Fury’s Avengers DNA serum, now has around two dozen superpowers cobbled together from 18 Avengers, Guardians and other other super-powered people (such as Thanos).
When she will come back into play is anyone’s guess, as is Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth, who aims to help G’iah and the refugee Skrulls find a safe haven. A popular meme is already going around that puts her alongside the likes of Harry Styles’ Eros and Brett Goldstein’s Hercules as MCU heroes introduced and then never seen again.
The ending comes as the series finale pulled in an individual episode rating of just 13% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the overall series is Marvel’s Studios’ lowest-rated Disney+ show on said site with 58% approval from critics and 63% from audiences.
All episodes of “Secret Invasion” are currently available on the Disney+ service.
