“The Marvels” Director Talks Time Gap

With “Dune: Part Two” having exited November, that leaves Marvel Studios’ “The Marvels” as one of the very few major tentpoles hitting this Fall.

One issue the film faces is its reliance on familiarity with past works. The film isn’t just a sequel to “Captain Marvel,” but also brings together elements of three series – “WandaVision,” “Secret Invasion” and “Ms. Marvel”.

That may be too much for some, especially fans who draw a hard line at not bothering with the Disney+ shows. How linked they will be we won’t really know until the film arrives, but director Nia DaCosta has revealed at least one key scene is already out there.

Speaking with Total Film Magazine (via Collider), DaCosta confirms that the post-credits scene in the series finale of “Ms. Marvel” was actually filmed for “The Marvels” movie.

Thus its placement means the events of the film take place directly after that series – no time gap for Ms. Marvel even as months will have passed for Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and years for Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) since the 1990s-set first “Captain Marvel”:

“One of the first times we see Kamala in the film is that moment from the end of ‘Ms. Marvel.’ So there’s not much of a gap for her in terms of story. But I think, spiritually, there’s a bit of time for Kamala’s powers to develop somewhat. And then throughout our film, you see them develop more and more.”

The intergalactic adventure will see heroines uncontrollably swapping places when using their powers after the film’s villain Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) finds a way to link them. DaCosta co-writes the script with Megan McDonnell whilst Samuel L. Jackson and Park Seo-joon co-star.

“The Marvels” premieres in cinemas on November 10th.
