“The Lost Boys” Getting A Stage Musical?

A stage musical prequel to the late Joel Schumacher’s 1980s classic “The Lost Boys” is in the works reports SyFy Wire.

“A Lost Boys Story” will reportedly focus on a younger version of Kiefer Sutherland’s David as he arrives to America from Lithuania and winds up at an orphanage run by eventual head vampire Max (played by Edward Herrmann in the film). He then hits the road, picking up the other vampires and creating a family with three other guys as they head for California.

Musician G Tom Mac, who wrote the film’s famed song “Cry Little Sister,” composed the score and says the show is almost finished. Mac says: “We tried to take a twist, whereby we know the story of the movie, but we don’t know how it all got there. And in the musical, we do. It’s very much a story of immortality, but it’s also a story about how people in their 20s think they’re immortal, anyway. It kind of runs that parallel of pop culture.”

All of the music is already available via Spotify as of now. Casting is underway with JD McCrary, who voiced the young Simba in Favreau’s “The Lion King” remake, will play the child vampire character Laddie. Malcolm McDowell is reportedly in talks to play Max.

The project isn’t likely to hit until 2022 and G Tom Mac says he received input from Schumacher before his death, calling the late filmmaker the musical’s biggest champion and a big fan of the opening number “Once Upon”.

A “The Lost Boys” TV series pilot has been in the works at The CW for some time but that project remains in stasis.
