PlayStation has released a new video for Naughty Dog’s long-in-development “The Last of Us Part II” as game creative head Neil Druckmann offers a behind-the-scenes look at how they developed the new narrative story for game.
Set five years later, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming and are living amongst a thriving community of survivors. When a violent event disrupts that peace, Ellie embarks on a relentless journey to carry out justice and find closure – hunting those responsible one by one.
The clip comes as the game has been subjected to significant amounts of scrutiny following apparent leaks of much of the game’s major story plot points and footage. Those leaks were initially pegged as being due to a disgruntled employee but was ultimately traced to someone connected to hackers who exploited a key vulnerability in a game patch according to PixelButts and Kotaku.
It’s thought said footage is from an early build of a game which is ultimately going to weigh in at about 100Gb in its final form. Reasoning for the leaks also isn’t clear but is thought to be akin to what happened to “Avengers: Endgame,” “Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker” and the upcoming “Wonder Woman 1984” with major story leaks coming from people claiming to be fans.
Several pieces have been written about this emerging new trend where some fans, disapproving of the way certain plot elements or characters are handled, use that as a justification for posting selectively chosen and worded spoilers into the fan community in order to deliberately taint the experience for everyone else.
Druckmann says within the studio there have been a lot of philosophical arguments about some of the events and what happens in the game and it will be more divisive than the first – but in a way that “raises those philosophical questions and asks the players to interpret some of the material that’s there and see where they stand on those questions.”
Subsequent weekly clips will look at the gameplay, the attention to detail, and the game world itself. The game itself is released June 19th.
