Netflix reportedly has put a sequel and a spin-off to Joe & Anthony Russo’s $200 million action thriller “The Gray Man” into motion.
The Russos will reportedly be set to return as directors for the sequel while Ryan Gosling will reprise his title role. The Russos will also produce the sequel through their AGBO production company alongside Mike Larocca, Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum.
Releasing on the service this past Friday, the movie debuted as the #1 movie in 92 countries along with landing an impressive 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (critics were less enthused at 48%). Actual viewership numbers haven’t been released as yet.
One change with the sequel is that the script by Stephen McFeeley he will be doing alone, as opposed to co-writing with usual partner Christopher Markus as he did on the first. The sequel is expected to draw more heavily on the Mark Greaney novel source material.
As for the spin-off, “Deadpool” and “Zombieland” scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are aboard as the screenwriters. Further details are under wraps beyond the confirmation that the series is aiming to be a “Hard R” rated project.
In addition, the Russos-produced “Extraction” sequel, starring Chris Hemsworth, is said to be targeting a 2023 release window.
