“The Goonies” Are Returning To Cinemas

Warner Bros. Pictures

As part of the Warner Bros. Pictures’ 100th anniversary celebration, Richard Donner’s iconic adventure film “The Goonies” is set to return to cinemas for a limited-time theatrical engagement.

The big screen run of the 1985 feature begins September 1st at select Regal and AMC Theatres and September 10th at Cinemark cinemas. Check your local theater website or app for tickets and showtimes.

The story follows brothers Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand (Josh Brolin), gadgeteer Data (Ke Huy Quan), cheeky Mouth (Corey Feldman), fibber Chunk (Jeff Cohen), and high-schoolers Andy (Kerri Green) and Stef (Martha Plimpton) – who set out to find long-lost pirate treasure and save their homes from foreclosure.

They discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. During the adventure, they are chased by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves.

Wsrners previously re-released the film to theaters in time for its 35th anniversary in 2020. The surviving cast members virtually reunited in support of charity and at that time, producer and story writer Steven Spielberg said writer Chris Columbus, director Richard Donner, and producer Lauren Schuler Donner had a lot of conversations about a sequel and had struggled to find a good idea.

Richard Donner’s passing in 2021 likely ended the chances of a sequel being done. The original film grossed $125 million worldwide from a budget of $19 million and has since become a cult film along with being deemed important enough to be preserved in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
