On the eve of its release, DC’s “The Flash” movie is reportedly on track to earn $155-165 million at the worldwide box-office this weekend, with over $70 million of that from North America alone.
The film initially got a stellar response out of CinemaCon and from very early media screenings. However, a still positive but far more muted response was expressed in regular reviews over the past fortnight which has cooled expectations.
One thing the reviews hasn’t seemed to really impact is tracking as the movie popped up with projections of $70-75 million the other week – those numbers haven’t budged even as we’ve gotten closer to release.
Part of that is the cast involved in the film hasn’t really been out there promoting it. Keaton is filming “Beetlejuice 2” in the UK but did show up at screenings both in London and Paris, events which were said to be great fun for the actor.
In addition, late-night talk shows are shut down due to the strike, and Warners has sidelined the film’s controversial star Ezra Miller during the media tour. Miller made his first showbiz appearance since his legal troubles at the film’s premiere last night.
Domestically “The Flash” opens against Disney/Pixar’s “Elemental” which is headed for around $35-40 million, and horror-comedy “The Blackening,” which is targeting a $6-8 million start.
In addition, strong holdovers are expected for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” with both set to potentially earn a further $30 million each at the box-office in their respective second and third weekends and overall box-office is said to be looking very healthy.
