“The Flash” Producer Talks Oliver’s Return

The CW

The upcoming ninth and final season of “The Flash” is not only closing out that show, but the entirety of the Arrowverse.

As a result, there have been numerous confirmed returnees to the Grant Gustin-led series with the most recent being Rick Cosnett who played CCPD Detective Eddie Thawne, Matt Letscher who played Reverse-Flash/Eobard Thawne, and Jessica Parker Kennedy who plays future daughter Nora West-Allen.

The big return though is Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, despite the character’s death (twice) in the ‘Crisis’ event. In a new interview with TV Line, showrunner Eric Wallace talked about honoring Arrow’s legacy and Amell’s return.

Wallace says he pitched the idea of Amell’s return to producer Greg Berlanti who loved the idea and asked Wallace to pitch it to the actor:

“So I got on the phone with Stephen – and this is all happening within a span of 18 hours, mind you – and I walked him through it. He said, ‘I love it. But can we do this extra thing?…and the call ended with [Amell saying], ‘I’m in. Let’s make this happen.’ It happened that fast.”

Given his sacrifice, how has Oliver Queen managed to come back? Wallace says: “We don’t change what has happened in the eight seasons of Arrow. [Rather] we honor all of that.” Wallace adds that “there won’t be a dry eye in the house at the end of that episode… it’s extremely emotional” referring to the Barry Allen and Oliver reunion.

Other returnees for the final run include David Ramsey, Keiynan Lonsdale, Nicole Maines, Javicia Leslie and Sendhil Ramamurhty. The final season of “The Flash” will premiere on The CW on Wednesday, February 8th.
