Premiering at CinemaCon this week, the Andy Muschietti-directed film adaptation of the DC Comics property “The Flash” has scored rave reviews across the board.
The film sees Barry Allen going back in time to try and prevent his mother’s murder, breaking the past and the future in the process. The result is a multiverse-spanning film which sees both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck returning to their Batman roles, Michael Shannon back as Zod, along with the opportunity for multiple cameos.
Though there is still an “Aquaman” sequel and “Blue Beetle” film to come, “The Flash” effectively serves as the end of the Snyderverse films that began with “Man of Steel” a decade ago with the board being wiped clean for Gunn and Safran’s new unified DC Universe.
Director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti showed off the “not quite the final cut of the film” to the press earlier this week, and Nerdist reports that the pair revealed that the initial assembly cut of the film was four hours long, and so some key cameos were left on the cutting room floor for time.
Specifically, a bunch of cameos from TV incarnations didn’t make the final cut, including Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman from the 1970s series, Burgess Meredith’s Penguin and Cesar Romero’s Joker from the 1960s “Batman” TV series, and most significantly Grant Gustin’s The Flash from the about to finish nine seasons long The CW series.
Muschietti said: “Of course, as I said before, the list of cameos…. was huge. So, obviously, we played with the idea of including DC characters from TV – but we just had to pick.”
Muschietti was reportedly very complimentary about “The Flash” TV series, which itself saw Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen cameo a few years back during its “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event. Muschietti also stays Marlon Brando’s Jor-El from Richard Donner’s original 1978 “Superman” film also was cut.
Considering the nature of those cameos being likely CG recreations of late actors or at least old reused footage, it begs the question of what characters we will see in the final film. “The Flash” begins in cinemas on June 16th.
