The Denzel Washington-led, R-rated, action thriller “The Equalizer 3” reportedly made $3.8 million in previews at the box office on Thursday.
This is in line with projections which suggest the film is likely to make between $28-30 million in its opening three-day weekend and anywhere from $33-40 million over the four-day Labor Day holiday frame – the second best debut for the holiday weekend t date (the best being Marvel’s “Shang-Chi”).
It will be the smallest three-day opening of the franchise. The film is expected to take the No. 1 spot ahead of Sony’s “Gran Turismo” film which topped the box-office last week and is expected to take $7-9 million this weekend.
The final “Equalizer” film sees Washington’s Robert McCall retired to Southern Italy, but he discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.
Dakota Fanning, Bill Pullman, Ashton Sanders, Orson Bean, Melissa Leo, Jonathan Scarfe and more co-star. Antoine Fuqua returned to helm.
The film has pulled in 76% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and 92% with audiences.
