Now that it’s Nexstar’s baby, The CW has set a new course forward as the network aims to both broaden its audience and appeal to older audiences, who are increasingly the largest portion of their linear viewership.
According to Deadline, The CW is now pursuing a mixture of procedural dramas and older-skewing dramas along with half-hour comedies, including multi-camera sitcoms, to fill out their slate.
Whilst they will continue with signature genre shows and teen soaps as they have always done, just not as many. The strategic shift won’t impact the already set 2022/23 schedule – but come this time in a year or two, things could be quite different.
The CW is also expected to be engaged in more third-party acquisitions as opposed to developing new series.
