The Cruise-Led “Deeper” Put On Hold

A month ago, the news came that the new Tom Cruise-led underwater supernatural action thriller “Deeper” had hit a setback. That setback was tied to the Doug Liman-directed film’s budget.

At the time, it was reported that Cruise was pushing for a $275 million budget, a number that Warner Bros. Pictures balked at as they were fine with the initial $200 million budget estimate and wouldn’t go any higher than $230 million.

The abrupt shift left Cruise and his team racing to relocate the film in time for the planned shoot this month, as several months of prep have already taken place.

Now, a new report at Puck News (via WoR) indicates the whole project has “hit a wall” with Liman already looking around for other projects as his next potential film.

Additionally, Universal Pictures, which was reportedly floated as a potential candidate to take over the project, reportedly hasn’t even heard a pitch for it. With its enormous budget, and no-one seemingly willing to bite so far – there’s obvious questions as to whether the film will get made at all.

The project would see Cruise play a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a deep-sea mission to explore a recently discovered ocean trench, only to encounter a mysterious and dangerous force. Ana de Armas has also been lined up to star.
