A report early last month appears to have come true – Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line are moving forward with a prequel to their “The Conjuring” franchise.
THR’s Borys Kit reports that the project has been greenlit by New Line following the massive success of “The Conjuring: Last Rites” which has earned over $487 million globally.
Award-winning short film director Rodrigue Huart (“Transylvanie,” “Trigger”) is reportedly in discussions to helm the project, making it his first major studio feature.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” was the final one for stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, with the franchise now shifting its focus to expanding its mythology through prequels and spinoffs.
Walter Hamada executive produces. Huart would deliver the first “Conjuring” film since 2019’s “Annabelle Comes Home” to not be directed by Michael Chaves, who helmed the third and fourth mainline entries, along with “The Nun 2” and “The Curse of La Llorona “.
Huart recently sold his script “Suffer Little Children,” a remake of the 1976 Spanish film “Who Can Kill a Child?” to Paramount.
Previously, it was reported that HBO Max is moving forward with a TV series based on the franchise, with Nancy Won as showrunner.
