“The Boys: Gen V” Producers Talk Season 2

Michele Fazekas, showrunner on “The Boys” college-set spin-off “Gen V,” says the new superhero show has not officially been picked up for a second season yet.

“Gen V” premiered its first three episodes last Friday to very good reviews with a 97% (7.25/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, however viewing numbers aren’t in yet so it’s not clear as to how well it has done with audiences.

That said, all signs are very good and the team have already discussed ideas post-strike. Fazekas tells The Wrap: “We do not have an official season to order yet. We’ve gotten the writers together to talk about what’s possible. So we’re hopeful.”

Showrunner Eric Kripke then confirmed a second-season writer’s room has already been established:

“We need to see how the show performs, and we need to see if people are watching it, and if Amazon’s happy. The fact that Amazon has paid for Michele to have a second season [writers] room is a good sign. So, you know, fingers crossed.”

Fazekas says whilst more seasons for the show were planned from the start, they haven’t locked in a set amount of seasons and are more focused on the characters as opposed to an overall arching plot at this point:

“The nice thing about working with Eric and working with Amazon is we’re not beholden to, ‘You have to go for X number of years.’ It’s like, where does the story take us? Where do the characters take us? I like being able to make decisions based on that versus based on hitting a number.”

Vernon Sanders, co-head of Television at Amazon Studios, was asked about that second-season writer’s room and shared an update on how the show’s going:

“We wanted to get the writers started right away figuring out what Season 2 looks like. We wanted to take a moment and make sure the show had the reception that we were looking for. In the first five days, we’ve been seeing incredible results, within the U.S., internationally. It’s 2023, and it’s in our top three most acquisitive shows. A ton of people signed up for the service just to watch, and I think that’s a testament to ‘The Boys’ and also word of mouth… We’re thrilled with what we’re seeing so far.”

Meanwhile in an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com, producer Pavun Shetty says future spin-offs aren’t a priority right now:

“We’d love to have multiple shows, but I think audiences are really savvy and sophisticated, and I think they understand when there’s a reason a show is coming out for the proper reasons, there’s a real story to tell, and it feels of the same world, but different.

I think they can sniff out when it’s just a show for a show’s sake, and so we are really thinking about what the next show could be and how it can be thoughtful and fit into the universe and feel like it’s a puzzle piece that fits in with everything else, but is not just a show for show’s sake.”

Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Maddie Phillips, Chance Perdomo, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Shelley Conn, Sean Patrick Thomas, Clancy Brown and Colby Minifie star in the “Gen V” series which releases new episodes on Prime Video every Friday.
