NBC’s long-running “The Blacklist” has seen more action in the past few weeks than it has in a few years.

It was revealed earlier this month that the show’s female lead Megan Boone, who plays Agent Elizabeth Keene, was exiting the series with last night’s eighth season finale to be her last episode.

Now it has been revealed that the show’s creator/executive producer Jon Bokenkamp will be departing as well. In a lengthy note on Twitter, Bokenkamp says: “it’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new.”

Bokenkamp’s longtime partner on the show John Eisendrath is staying on as showrunner for the upcoming ninth season.

The last three episodes of the current season, particularly the second to last which unfolds in black-and-white flashback, resolved the series’ various mysteries bar the central one – the true identity of Raymond Reddington (James Spader).

One possible solution to that was strongly hinted at, but the show stopped short of confirming and could potentially be trying to fool viewers with its suggestive camera work, dialogue choices and editing.

With Boone and Bokenkamp’s exit, it’s not clear what the show will look like when it returns next year and deals with the repercussions of the final scene.
