Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is now in cinemas and the first box-office numbers are in with the Robert Pattinson-led film snagging $21.6 million in previews.
That number however includes some limited fan showings on Tuesday and Wednesday along with the more standard Thursday night preview count. It’s estimated around $4 million of the total was from Tuesday/Wednesday.
Even with that factored out, the remaining $17.6 million or so would be the second-best preview night of late, behind only “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at $50 million and ahead of “Black Widow” with $13.6 million. “Eternals” and “Shang-Chi” both brought in just shy of $10 million.
In overall previews, $21.6 million is around the 22nd highest preview night – on par with “Captain Marvel” and David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad”. As those films went on to opening weekends in the $133-151 million range, it’s possible “The Batman” will come somewhere close to that for its domestic opening weekend debut.
The best Batman preview night remains “The Dark Knight Rises” which snagged $30.6 million, followed by “The Dark Knight” with $18.5 million. The biggest preview night prior to the pandemic was “Rise of Skywalker” with $40 million.
