The 2020 Releases Being Shot On Film

With Kodak having recently signed an extension with Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros. Pictures for longer-term film stock purchase commitments, movies shot on film aren’t going anywhere for now.

2019 saw many 35mm film releases including four Best Picture nominees with “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story” and parts of “The Irishman”. However, no major films were shot or projected in 70mm.

2020 will see four major large-format releases – Cary Fukunaga’s “No Time to Die” and Chris Nolan’s “Tenet” which are both being done on both 65mm film and IMAX by cinematographers Linus Sandgren and Hoyte van Hoytema respectively. There’s also Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” and Kenneth Branagh’s “Death on the Nile” which will be done in mixed film formats by their respective cinematographers Matthew Jensen and Haris Zambarloukos.

Then there’s those shot on regular old-fashioned 35mm film. These include: Radha Blank’s “The 40-Year Old Version,” Kenneth Branagh’s “Artemis Fowl,” George Nolfi’s “The Banker,” Antonio Campos’ “The Devil All the Time,” Justin Lin’s “F9: The Fast Saga,” Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island,” Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho,” Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” Sofia Coppola’s “On the Rocks,” John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part II,” Benh Zeitlin’s “Wendy” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”.

Numerous series including HBO’s “Westworld” and “Succession” are also being shot on film. For the full report, head to Indiewire
