In the wake of the reveal of David Tennant’s return to the role of The Doctor yesterday, the actor sat down with BBC Today to discuss coming back to the part for three specials to air next year.
Both Tennant and Catherine Tate will return for the specials alongside other familiar faces such as Bernard Cribbins. The three episodes, which have already been shot, will celebrate the franchise’s 60th anniversary.
Tennant, who played the 10th incarnation of The Doctor along with the upcoming 14th, tells the outlet:
“[I was] worried it would be difficult to get in the groove again, but it has been straightforward. We’ve managed to keep the essence of the show, and the world now has a very exciting moment to look forward to.
Doctor Who was a wonderful time in my life, and it runs through me like a stick of rock so to be part of that show, go on that journey and return to it when I thought it was a memory has been an absolute present.”
Once the three specials wrap, Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the 15th incarnation of The Doctor and will get his own full-season series in 2024. A clip of Gatwa in the role was shown, suggesting he will appear in at least one of the specials.
Russell T. Davies takes over as showrunner with these specials, which will air in November.
