Apple TV+ wrapped up the third and seemingly final season of “Ted Lasso” earlier this year, a finale that seemed to effectively end the story for Jason Sudeikis’ character but left the door open for some of the supporting characters.
In the lead-up to the finale and in the time since, everyone is frustratingly non-committal. Co-creator Brendan Hunt, co-star/writer Brett Goldstein and actors like Hannah Waddingham have all indicated there are unresolved storylines that could still be explored but don’t indicate there are any actual plans to continue.
Ahead of the show’s run at the Primetime Emmy Awards which were to be next month but have now moved to January, THR spoke with the finale’s director Declan Lowney about whether the show is actually over.
Lowney, who won an Emmy for his work on the second season, says it was felt during production that this was only “the end for now”. He goes on to explain how he approach filming of the finale as a point of closure:
“Everybody knew it was the end, but it’s also the end for now. (Laughs.) It’s going to be two or three years before anything happens – if anything happens – so let’s try and tie up all these stories properly.
I’m trying to remember how the script was delivered, because I’ve a feeling I might have gotten a big chunk of it, and then there’d be more coming – but I didn’t know how much more yet. I was like, ‘There’s a lot of tying up to do!’ And then Jason gave me the remaining pages and it was like, ‘Ah! That’s what he’s doing here.'”
Apple itself has stayed quiet regarding the show’s future, though its streaming service has managed to build up a library of content that should ensure its success now that its biggest series has seemingly finished.
