Ahead of the release of the third season of the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ comedy series “Ted Lasso,” those involved seem to be making it clear the new season will mark the show’s final run.
Since its inception, the show was reportedly conceived as a three-season series and throughout production, the cast was playing it coy regarding the show’s fate, not confirming it either way.
Now though, with the premiere imminent and the actors having completed their commitments to the show, all indications are they’ve moved on. Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie Tartt in the series, is jumping over to another Apple TV+ series – news breaking today that he’s joining the second season of “Surface” in a major role.
Hannah Waddingham, who plays club owner Rebecca Welton, reportedly has multiple gigs lined up according to Deadline and she tells the outlet the third season certainly seems to be one of closure:
“It’s certainly the end of this particular story thread. And when you see it, you’ll see that it couldn’t continue past this bit. Who knows what will come next? I have genuinely no idea. And I think they’re right not to tell me.”
Asked about the potential for a spin-off series either about her character or anyone else, she couldn’t say:
“To be honest, I genuinely don’t know. And you never know how they’re going to splice the season together either. There’s the opportunity and the fodder for several of the characters to spin off in their own direction. And I think the characters are so beloved that it would be reasonable for them to do so. But I know for a fact that there’s no plans of anything like that at the moment. To be honest, I’m not even sure that at this moment Jason [Sudeikis] even knows what he wants to do.”
Sudeikis developed the show with Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly and confirmed to the outlet the new season is an end to the series in its current form. He tells Deadline:
“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell. The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet – that being Season 3 – it’s flattering. Maybe by May 31st, once all 12 episodes of the season [have been released], they’re like, ‘Man, you know what, we get it, we’re fine. We don’t need anymore, we got it.’ But until that time comes, I will appreciate the curiosity beyond what we’ve come up with so far… The fact that people want more, even if it’s a different avenue is lovely.”
