Showtime has announced an April 14th premiere date for “Waco: The Aftermath,” a five-episode sequel series to the acclaimed 2018 limited series “Waco” which starred Taylor Kitsch and Michael Shannon.
One of the first major projects to premiere on the Paramount Network, the original series was a dramatized exploration of the 51-day 1993 standoff between the FBI, ATF and the religious cult the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas – one which culminated in a fatal fire.
Kitsch played the cult’s charismatic leader David Koresh with Michael Shannon as FBI investigator and negotiator Gary Noesner. Andrea Riseborough, Paul Sparks, Rory Culkin, Shea Whigham, Melissa Benoist, John Leguizamo, Julia Garner, and Glenn Fleshler co-starred.
The sequel series, initially produced for Paramount+ but now airing on Showtime, focuses on the fallout of the disaster: the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidian sect and the rise of homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh.
The five-episode limited series also offers a broader context for the escalation of the American militia movement that foreshadows the infamous attacks of the Oklahoma City bombing and the January 6 insurrection of the U.S. capital.
John Leguizamo and Michael Shannon will reprise their roles from the original miniseries whilst they are joined by David Costabile, J. Smith-Cameron, Giovanni Ribisi, John Hoogenakker, Keean Johnson and Abbey Lee.
A trailer has been released mostly showing off clips from the 2018 mini-series which will have all episodes available to stream from March 3rd ahead of the weekly rollout of the new ‘Aftermath’ mini-series from April 14th.
